Abaddon the Lord of Avernus is a melee strength Hero known as one of the most versatile characters in Dota due to his rather low mana dependence, short spell cool-downs and a large number of viable item choices. His ability to help sustain his allies and himself and his strong tower diving capacity gives him solid lane presence. Many of his abilities offer a large sum of utility, which makes him a strong support Hero. Mist Coil serves as both a single target nuke and heal that helps shift the sustainability of both allied and enemy heroes in a lane at his will, though sacrificing a portion of his own health. Aphotic Shield holds as one of the most useful abilities in the game, able to shield a target from some damage while also able to reflect said damage to a huge area. The most important aspect is how it is able to dispel many status effects such as slows and stuns. His other abilities allow him to become a mix between a semi-carry and tank. Abaddons passive, Curse of Avernus, allows his attacks to not only slow down his enemy target, but increase the attack and movement speed of any ally attacking the same target. With his ultimate, Borrowed Time, Abaddon is able to shift all non-HP removal damage he receives into health. When not on cool-down, Borrowed Time may activate passively when Abaddons health falls under a certain threshold, even under the most dire situations. Due to his powerful spells and versatility, Abaddon is an excellent addition to any team.

Bio
Abaddon, the Lord of Avernus | "The fog of war is no match for the mist of fate." | Role: | | Lore: | The Font of Avernus is the source of a family's strength, a crack in primal stones from which vapors of prophetic power have issued for generations. Each newborn of the cavernous House Avernus is bathed in the black mist, and by this baptism they are given an innate connection to the mystic energies of the land. They grow up believing themselves fierce protectors of their lineal traditions, the customs of the realm--but what they really are protecting is the Font itself. And the motives of the mist are unclear. When the infant Abaddon was bathed in the Font, they say something went awry. In the child's eyes there flared a light of comprehension that startled all present and set the sacerdotes to whispering. He was raised with every expectation of following the path all scions of Avernus took--to train in war, that in times of need he might lead the family's army in defense of the ancestral lands. But Abaddon was always one apart. Where others trained with weapons, he bent himself to meditation in the presence of the mist. He drank deep from the vapors that welled from the Font, learning to blend his spirit with the potency that flowed from far beneath the House; he became a creature of the black mist. There was bitterness within the House Avernus--elders and young alike accusing him of neglecting his responsibilities. But all such accusations stopped when Abaddon rode into battle, and they saw how the powers of the mist had given him mastery over life and death beyond those of any lord the House had ever known. |

Aphotic Shield | | Ability | Affects | Damage |
---|
Target Unit | Allied units | Magical |
| Summons dark energies around an ally unit, creating a shield that absorbs a set amount of damage before expiring. When the shield is destroyed it will burst and deal damage equal to the amount it could absorb to an area around it. Removes certain types of negative buffs and stuns on cast. | Range: 500 Radius: 675 Duration: 15 Absorbed Damage: 110/140/170/200 | 12/10/8/6 | 100/105/110/115 | Notes:- If Abaddon has Aphotic Shield on him, it will not burst if Abaddon is currently under the effect of Borrowed Time.
- Will replace any Aphotic Shield currently active on the target, so two shields will never be active at the same time on the same unit. Doing so will make the first shield burst.
- Aphotic Shield will burst at the end of its duration if it has not absorbed sufficient damage.
- Will always burst for the maximum damage, regardless of how much was absorbed.

Curse of Avernus | | Ability | Affects | |
---|
Passive | Units | |
| Abaddon strikes an enemy with chilling power on each attack, causing all units who attack the slowed enemy to gain increased movement speed, along with faster attack speed, for a limited time. | Duration of Slow: 2.5 Slow: 5%/10%/15%/20% Duration of Bonuses: 4.5 Bonus Attack Speed: 10/20/30/40 Bonus Movement Speed: 15% Notes:- The Curse of Avernus buff is placed on Abaddon at the start of his attack, so he gets the bonus on his first hit. The debuff is only applied on hit.
- Works partially on towers. Abaddon will receive the buff from attacking a tower, however no debuff is applied to the tower so no other targets may benefit from it.
- Can affect allies, including creeps being denied. Enemies attacking an ally target affected by the debuff benefit from the Curse of Avernus buff.
- Affects magic immune targets.

Borrowed Time | | Ability | Affects | |
---|
No Target | Self | |
| When activated, most negative buffs will be removed and any damage you take will heal instead of damaging you. If the ability is not on cooldown, it will passively activate when your hitpoints drop below a certain threshold. | Duration: 3/4/5 (5/6/7*) | 60/50/40 | |
Increases duration. | Notes:- Borrowed Time will activate itself if you suffer damage while you have less than 400 HP.
- Upon casting Borrowed Time, Abaddon will effectively dodge any projectiles currently flying at him.
- When activated it removes most negative buffs from Abaddon, including Stuns and Doom.
- Borrowed Time can be manually activated.
- It is possible to kill Abaddon without triggering Borrowed Time's auto-activation if he were to take damage higher than his remaining health, due to the fact that on activation of Borrowed Time, Abaddon takes the damage that activated it and then heals double the amount. Any other damage taken during the ulti will deal 0 damage and heal instead. This is intended mechanics.
- Culling Blade and Ice Blast will kill Abaddon if he fits the health threshold, even with Borrowed Time active.

Explanation:
Starting Items:
- Because of Mist Coil's backlash damage, Tangoes help in compensating for it.
- Iron Branches help Abaddon get early stats to provide better sustain with his rather spammable abilities. It also readies him of the components needed for Mekansm or Pipe of Insight.
- As a support Hero, buying the Animal Courier is expected as the Hero is less item-dependent than others.
Early Game:
- Tranquil Boots allow Abaddon to regenerate more health for use of Mist Coil without the need of more Tangoes. Components may also be used later on for Soul Ring or Vladmir's Offering after disassembly.
- Sage's Mask readies the Hero in building bigger items such as Soul Ring or Ring of Basilius, while providing early mana regeneration for ability spamming.
Core Items:
- After disassembling Tranquil Boots, Phase Boots gives Abaddon a solid movement speed bonus for him to catch up to support troubled allies or to pin down enemies.
- Soul Ring greatly improves the Hero's mana management issues if ever some may be encountered. Be warned, however, that using the item uses HP removal, which does not trigger Aphotic Shield nor Borrowed Time.
- Urn of Shadows vastly increases Abaddon's chasing and sustain abilities.
Situational Items:
- Vladmir's Offering is a solid item to Abaddon, no matter what role he takes. Its use is especially greater when coupled with strong melee Heroes in his team.
- Mekansm and Pipe of Insight can be helpful to any team, but could also improve Abaddon's survivability when Borrowed Time is incapable to do so such as when it is off cooldown, or if the damage dealt is too lethal for the ultimate to handle.
- Minions summoned by Necronomicon gain bonuses from Curse of Avernus, greatly improving their utility and output.
- Aghanim's Scepter extends the duration of Borrowed Time by 2 seconds.
- Abaddon's lack of stuns and disables may be sorted with a Scythe of Vyse.
